How to close a posting period

Lock or close a month so nobody posts with that date, let the cash register keep selling while you close, and see who changed each period.

On this page

Each month is a period. Its status says what can still be posted with a date in that month.

What each status means

Status What posts
Open Everything
Open except sales Everything except sales and incoming payments (as in SAP)
Locked except sales Only sales and incoming payments: the point of sale and routes keep selling while you close the rest
Closing Only manual entries by whoever manages the periods, for closing adjustments
Closed Nothing

Sales, deliveries, incoming payments, point-of-sale returns and cash counts count as sales. Purchasing, inventory and outgoing payments count as the rest.

Why: SAP has "Unlocked except sales". Nori adds Locked except sales so the store doesn't stop on the 1st while accounting reviews last month's purchases and inventory.

Close a month step by step

  1. Go to Accounting › Setup › Posting periods and choose the Fiscal year.
  2. On the month's row click View detail. You'll see its entries, debits and credits, entries by origin and its status history.
  3. In Change status select Locked except sales while you review. Type a Reason (optional) and confirm.
  4. Review the month's trial balance and enter your adjusting entries.
  5. When everything adds up, go back to Change status and select Closed.

Close several months at once

  1. In Posting periods open Bulk actions.
  2. In Up to choose the date.
  3. In Action choose Close periods or Lock except sales.
  4. Click Apply and confirm.

It applies to the periods that end on that date or earlier. When locking except sales, periods already closed stay closed.

Reopen a period

Open its View detail and in Change status select Open. The history keeps who changed it, when and the reason.

Period 13

It holds the fiscal year's closing adjustments, dated on the last day of the year. They show apart from December in the trial balance and in electronic accounting (month 13). The year-end closing uses it.

If something doesn't add up

  • "Period … is Closed: it does not take this entry": the document date falls in a period that doesn't allow it. Change the date or ask whoever manages the periods to open it.
  • You don't see Change status or Bulk actions: your role lacks Open, lock and close posting periods.
  • Next year's months are missing: create the fiscal year.
