Down payments: invoice and apply them

Invoice the customer's down payment, then apply it to the invoice for the goods with the credit memo the SAT requires.

Updated on October 24, 2026

Nori follows the SAT (Mexico's tax authority) rules for down payments. First you invoice what the customer pays up front. Then you invoice the full sale and relate the down payment to it, and a credit memo deducts what was already paid.

Set up the down payment item

You invoice the down payment with its own item. In Inventory › Items, create a non-inventory item (for example "Down payment") and check Down payment item. Its SAT product code is usually 84111506 with unit ACT. Confirm with your accountant.

1. Invoice the down payment

  1. Go to Sales › Down payments and create a new one.
  2. Choose the customer and add the down payment item with the amount they're paying.
  3. Save and collect. You can record the payment now or later in Payments › Incoming payments.

If the series is electronic, the down payment is stamped (certified with the SAT) like any other invoice. You can only apply down payments that are paid.

2. Apply the down payment to the sale invoice

  1. Create the invoice for the goods in Sales › Invoices (or copy it from the sales order) for the same customer.
  2. The invoice shows a Customer's down payments section listing each paid down payment that still has a balance: folio, date, total, amount already applied and balance.
  3. In the Apply column, enter how much of each down payment to use on this invoice, in full or in part.
  4. Save the invoice.

When it's posted:

  • The invoice is issued for the full sale amount and relates the down payment with relation type 07.
  • Nori automatically issues a "down payment application" credit memo for the applied amount, with payment form 30, related to the invoice.
  • That credit memo pays off that part of the invoice. You collect the rest as usual.

The credit memo carries the same taxes as the down payment: if you invoiced it with 8% VAT (border region) or 0%, the memo uses that rate. If the down payment had lines at different rates, the memo has one line per rate, split in the same proportion.

Nori tracks how much of each down payment has been applied, so you can split one down payment across several invoices until its balance runs out. The down payment record shows Applications of this down payment.

From the register

When you ring up a sales order in the POS for a customer with down payments, and the sale is issued as an invoice, the payment screen shows Down payments available with an Apply down payments to the invoice option.

Limits

  • Down payments only apply to invoices, never to tickets or deliveries.
  • The down payment and the invoice must belong to the same customer and use the same currency.
  • Canceled or unpaid down payments don't appear in the list.
  • If you stamp, stamp the down payment before the invoice that references it.
