How to process a return at the point of sale

Find the ticket or invoice, choose what comes back, and refund the money the same way the customer paid or keep it as store credit.

A return at the register brings the goods back to the warehouse and the money back to the customer in one step. If the sale was a ticket, Nori creates a return; if it was an invoice, a credit memo.

Process the return

  1. At the point of sale press F10 (or Alt+D). Shift sales opens.
  2. If the sale is from another shift or another day, search for it by number, customer or reference.
  3. Click Return on the sale.
  4. On each line, type how many units come back. Next to each one you see how many are returnable. Return all fills them all.
  5. Under Refund with, check the payment form. Nori suggests the one the sale was paid with.
  6. Type the Reason or tap one of the suggestions (Damaged item, Changed their mind…).
  7. Click Record return.

When it's done you see in large type how much you give back, under Refund to customer. If the register prints on payment, the receipt prints.

Where the money goes

  • Cash: it comes out of the shift's register. If the register doesn't have enough cash, Nori won't record the return and tells you how much there is.
  • Card on a connected terminal: the refund goes to the same card, linked to the original charge. If the sale was paid partly by card and partly in cash, at most what was charged to the card goes back to it, and the rest is given in cash. If the provider rejects the refund, the return isn't saved. See Connected card terminals.
  • Store credit (credit memo): invoices only. No money goes out; the credit memo stays in the customer's favor for their next purchase.

Nori never refunds more than what was paid for the sale, counting earlier returns. If the sale was on credit and hasn't been paid, no money comes out of the register.

Why: in SAP B1 you would record the return and then a separate outgoing payment. At Nori's point of sale they go together and the movement shows in the shift's cash count.

Prices and wallet

Lines come back at the price and discount they were sold at, not today's price. If the customer earned wallet balance with that purchase, what those lines earned is taken back.

Authorization

If your company turned on the POS return authorization type in Administration › Users and security › Authorization types, Nori asks for a supervisor's approval when you record the return, on site with their PIN or remotely. See Authorizations and supervisor PIN.

If you don't see…

  • The sale in the list: without a search, only sales collected in your shift appear. Type the number or the customer's name.
  • The Return button or returnable lines: the sale was already fully returned, cancelled, or the ticket is already in a global invoice. For a ticket that was invoiced, issue a credit memo on the invoice.
  • Store credit: it only appears when the sale is an invoice. A ticket is refunded.
  • That it can be recorded: you need an open shift, except to keep store credit.
