How to enter opening balances and opening stock
Load the stock you start with against opening balances (not as income) and enter the balances of banks, customers, suppliers and other accounts with an opening entry.

When you start keeping the books in Nori, your accounts start at zero. The balances you bring in go against the Opening balances account of G/L account determination (General tab), so the opening doesn't touch the month's profit.
1. Opening stock
The stock the company starts with is not income. Load it with a goods receipt that uses an opening stock reason:
- Go to Inventory › Goods receipts and create a new one.
- In Reason choose the opening stock one (the INI reason your company comes with is already marked).
- Enter the items, quantities and their cost. Nori warns: "Opening stock: posted against the opening balance, not as income."
- Save.
The entry debits Inventory (stock) and credits Opening balances, at each item's cost. If you count your stock with a physical count, you can also post the first count with that reason.
To create another opening reason, check Opening stock in Administration › Catalogs › Adjustment reasons. It only applies to goods receipt reasons.
Why: SAP Business One has a separate transaction, "Inventory Opening Balance". In Nori it is the same goods receipt; the reason decides the offsetting account.
2. Banks
When you set up each bank account, type its opening balance as of a date; if the date falls in an open period, Nori can post it. See How to set up your bank accounts.
3. Customers, suppliers and other accounts
Enter a manual journal entry dated on the first day of your first open period:
- One line per account with a balance: cash, fixed assets, taxes, loans, equity…
- On customers, suppliers and down payments (control accounts), one line per business partner, so their ledger and the aging match.
- The difference, against Opening balances.
Review the first month's trial balance: it should show the balance sheet you start with.
If you already loaded stock as a regular adjustment
If your opening stock went in as income (against "Other income from inventory adjustments"), Nori doesn't change entries already posted. Fix it with a manual journal entry: debit that other income account and credit Opening balances, for the same amount.
If something doesn't add up
- "Loading the opening stock takes the Load opening stock permission": the Administrator and Supervisor roles have it. Ask for it to be assigned.
- "Only a goods receipt reason can be the opening stock": the checkbox doesn't apply to goods issues.
- The aging doesn't match the customers account: opening balances on a control account without documents behind them show as a difference. That's expected while those balances are there.
- The opening entry won't post: check that its date falls in an open period.
