How to enter a manual journal entry
Enter an entry with its debits and credits, balance it, post it, review it as T-accounts and reverse it if you made a mistake.

Nori's documents post their own entries. A manual journal entry is for everything else: accruals, depreciation, reclassifications, opening balances and closing adjustments.
Enter the journal entry
- Go to Accounting › Journal entries and click New journal entry.
- Fill in the header: Posting date, Remarks and, if you use them, Reference 1 to Reference 3, Due date and Document date. In Notes you can leave the explanation or the calculation.
- On each line choose the Account (type the code or part of the name) and type the Debit or the Credit, never both.
- On a control account (customers, suppliers, down payments) set the Business partner.
- If you use cost centers, choose the one for each dimension.
- Line remarks are optional.
- Use Add line for more lines. If a difference is left at the end, Balance with one line puts it on the last line.
- When the bar says Balanced, click Post.
Nori won't post until debits and credits match.
In foreign currency: choose the Currency and the Exchange rate; each line carries its amount in that currency and Nori works out the local currency.
Review the entry
On a posted entry you have:
- Where it came from and where it went: a summary of the accounts money left and the ones it went to.
- View: Table with the lines, or T-accounts with each account as a T, its debit, its credit and the net movement.
- Print for the entry on paper or as PDF.
- Comments: team notes that don't change the entry. You can delete yours within 10 minutes.
- Attachments: the invoice, the calculation or the backup of the entry.
Reverse a journal entry
A posted entry is never edited.
- Open the entry.
- Next to Reverse, check the date: Nori suggests the Reversal date if you entered one, or today.
- Click Reverse and confirm.
Nori posts an entry with the same lines the other way around, linked to the original. Then enter the correct one.
Why: as in SAP, a reversal leaves a trail. Nobody can change a posted entry without it showing.
Only manual entries are reversed here. An automatic entry is reversed by cancelling its document or payment.
For several entries someone else reviews
Use journal vouchers: you enter several entries in a batch and they post together.
If something doesn't add up
- "Account … is a title account": pick a subaccount; only active accounts take postings.
- "Account … does not allow manual entries": the account only moves with documents (inventory, for example). Change it in the chart if you really need to post to it by hand.
- "Account … is a control account: line … needs the business partner": set the customer or supplier.
- "Period … is Closed" or "There is no posting period for…": check the date or the posting periods.
- You don't see New journal entry: your role lacks Enter manual journal entries and journal vouchers. Reverse takes Reverse journal entries.
